Cicero Rufus "Rufe" Perry, a veteran of the San Jacinto campaign, joined the Texas Rangers in July of 1836 and served with them for the next forty years. He also participated in the Mexican War and the Civil War. His father William Marshall Perry was also with Houston at San Jacinto and was a Texas Ranger and an Indian fighter. In November 1835, Texas lawmakers created a corps of Texas Rangers to guard the frontier between the Brazos and Trinity Rivers.
